The Walking Dead season 5 finale recap: A bloody showdown. By Morgan Jeffery Monday, Mar 30 2015, 23:15 BST. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+. Season 5, episode 16 Aired Monday, Mar 30 2015 at 21:00 BST on FOX. Season 5-b of The Walking Dead has been mostly solid, occasionally - with the tragic demise of Tyreese. and later Noah's remarkably brutal killing - straying into the spectacular. But to make the slow-burn build-up – these eight episodes, and even the eight before - worthwhile, this finale has to serve up something extra special. In short, we've witnessed the long-brewing divide and now 'Conquer' has to deliver the goods, and then some. Most crucial is its need to answer a question that's recurred throughout this batch of episodes – who knows how to live best in this nightmare? Is it Rick, or is it Deanna. The latter has shown a willingness not only to be cut off from the outside world, but also to turn a blind eye to the horrors within, which understandably came into conflict with Rick's more aggressive 'kill-or-be-killed' outlook. The reveal that Pete has been abusing his family finally saw their contrasting attitudes clash head on at the climax of last week's episode – as Rick, spurred on by Carol, sought to execute the brute. © AMC / Gene Page. Following his bloodthirsty tirade, a battered and bruised Rick is being watched over by Michonne, who seems to have got all the aggression out of her system, serving once more as the bastion of reason and compassion. Rick's demons are not so easily exorcised – having rebuilt something resembling his old life, he's gone from leader and lawman to captive and man-on-trial. But this is not nearly enough to engender a shift in his sensibilities – violence (or at least, the threat of violence) is the only option he'll consider as a response to Deanna's threat of exile. More unnerving still is the possibility mooted by Glenn – that violence is not just Rick's modus operandi, but something closer to an addiction, something he's intentionally been driving towards. Whatever the truth behind Rick's motives, Deanna has to make a decision regarding his fate - and 'Conquer' has to determine whether she or Rick is in the right. We get an answer of sorts - but typically for The Walking Dead. it's far from straightforward – lines of morality remain blurred and what's depicted here is entirely open to interpretation. Because yes, Rick's friends all speak out in his defence; yes, Glenn pays the price for opting to give Nicholas a second chance; yes, Reg's pacifism is undermined by his murder at Pete's hands; and yes, his execution spurs Deanna to embrace Rick's ideology – "to change" as he desires. But is it really as simple as 'Rick was right all along' - ask yourself this. would any of this bloodshed have occurred in the first place if Rick's party had never come to Alexandria? Could Deanna's approach have been the right one, given different circumstances. © AMC / Gene Page. Was the town a ticking bomb – or are 'our' survivors the explosive element? I'm not sure I have the answers, but certainly Pete's cries moments before his death ("This is him!" - meaning Rick) seem haunting on reflection. For now, Alexandria is still "home" – though all the aggression within its walls seems set to turn inwards. There are more signs here of that other potential schism, between the more moderate types in Rick's group – Glenn, Daryl, Michonne - and the more extreme - Rick himself, and the like-minded Carol, now a playful psychopath who continues to poke and provoke Rick as a form of spiky encouragement. Here's hoping at least one of the survivors directs said aggression towards simpering bore Father Gabriel – the pathetic preacher is desperately in need of either a speedy death or some fast-track character rehabilitation, of the same sort afforded to Eugene. The Alexandria plot then reaches a dramatic zenith – an open-ended conclusion that's nonetheless satisfying - but elsewhere 'Conquer' doesn't pick up what preceding episodes have put down quite so successfully. © AMC / Gene Page. Morgan's resurgence has been teased all season, with Lennie James making brief cameo appearances since the premiere, while we've also been drip-fed hints regarding the mysterious 'W' emblem that keeps cropping up on corpses. Those two strands are tied together here, though following an electrifying reintroduction for Morgan – in a much better state, mental and physical, than he was in season three's 'Clear' – the episode takes its sweet time in bringing him together with Daryl and Aaron. The odd-couple pairing of the latter two is unexpectedly compelling - while the Daryl / Aaron scenes could perhaps be considered inessential to the overall arc, they're the sort of indulgence that a bumper-length finale can allow itself. The eventual reunion between Rick and Morgan - moments after the former has executed Pete – is also scintillating (and hopefully a strong indication that Lennie James will be sticking around next season). But it's hugely frustrating that 'Conquer' really brings us no closer to the threat of The Wolves - having teased that particular reveal for so long, why not follow through now. It's an approach for which The Walking Dead has form - following up a comparatively quiet season four finale with an absolutely barnstorming season five premiere, so perhaps this episode will look a lot different come October. For now though, taken on its own esteem, 'Conquer' delivers high-drama and exceptional performances, but not quite the resolution many were expecting - and so can't help but feel just a little underwhelming as a result.
